This beautiful space above the town of Weston-super-Mare is now a 130-hectare nature reserve. There are many walking and cycling trails through the woods and on a clear day spectacular views across Sand Bay towards Wales.

Prior to the outbreak of World War I this space would have looked very different with 80% of its trees having been felled during the war to be sent off to the Western Front for shoring up the trenches. Hundreds of soldiers were billeted in the town during the war for training exercises such as digging trenches on the beach.
